Shotokan karate is a school of karate developed by Gichin Funakoshi.
Funakoshi is famous for bringing the principles of the martial
art from the island of Okinawa to the Japanese mainland. Since
its origins, it has grown to become the standard form taught in
the US.
Shotokan karate uses belt colors to indicate rank. Originally,
there were three divisions: white, brown and black. White indicated
a beginner; black was an expert and brown was the intermediate.
Now, there are 10 different levels including orange, red, yellow,
and green in ascending order.
Funakoshi thought that traditional martial arts focused too much
on combat, so Shotokan karate puts more emphasis on health, breathing,
mind and body control release and of energy. These lessons are
make the student more in-tune with their body, which helps bring
more control to their daily lives.
