A karate suit is also known as a gi in traditional practice.
The most important things to think about when picking out a gi
are fit and comfort. Depending on taste, a heavier suit might
be more comfortable while avoiding wear and tear, but a light
suit will enable quicker movement.
The polyester-blend is the most popular style of karate suit.
The 50/50 mix of cotton and polyester make these suits practically
wrinkle-free. The low-cost of these gis makes them favorable to
beginning students. Polyester, however, is not as breathable as
a cotton suit, which can lead to more sweating in the polyester-blend
suit.
White is the traditional color of a karate suit. Many dojos (any
formal martial arts training facility) are deeply rooted in the
traditions of karate and prefer students to wear the white suit.
In less-strict dojos, students can add their own flair and personality
by wearing black, brown, or even American flag-style gis.
