Any beginning martial artist should gain a basic knowledge
of karate equipment. The first thing a student needs is a uniform,
or gi. These are usually white and made of a cotton/polyester
blend, however there are many manufacturers that offer a wide
variety of colors–from black, red to multi-colored. Some
dojos require the traditional white, so make sure what rules apply
to you before getting any other color.
Lightweight uniforms are the best option for beginning students
who are undecided about seriously pursuing karate. A lightweight
(6 oz. or so) uniform is the cheapest piece of karate equipment,
but it also will not withstand the inevitable wear that takes
place during sparring.
Sparring gear is also a very important piece of karate equipment.
Made of thick, heavy duty foam, sparring helmets act as helmets:
are light and protect the head from disastrous blows. Hand guards
are like gloves–made to fit over hands, they soften punches.
Any student engaged in contact practice should have a set of sparring
gear to protect themselves.
