Karate
belts are worn by students during various levels of training.
Officially called the Kyu system, different colors of belts designate
rank depending on the level of training. There are 10 levels of
training that a student must pass before achieving the coveted
black belt.
The Kyu system actually originated from Judo, whose founder,
Kano Jigoro, had the idea to use karate belts to show rank. Until
a student achieves black belt, they are still considered in initiation.
The white
belt is the tenth level of Kyu and assigned to beginners who
have to pass each level in descending order until they have reached
the first level.
All of the karate
belts have a different set of corresponding requirements and
practices. During the initial lessons, students have to practice
stance, balance and coordination to move on to a new belt-color.
In the upper levels, speed and power are added, which the student
must learn to move on.
