Karate is the most popular of the martial arts, often portrayed
in movies, TV and other pop culture. Although the studies include
attack moves like punching and kicking, the student learns that
the true opponent his him/herself and that eliminating weakness
in their karate helps them eliminate them in their lives.
Karate is divided into three different levels of training.
• The kihon stage involves the fundamentals, which involves
performing repeated drills.
• The kata stage builds physical strength in students by
having them stay in deep stances that build leg and cardio-vascular
strength.
• The last stage is the kumite stage that allows students
to spar against each other.
Karate emphasizes inner-peace and becomes more of a way of life
than a mode of self-defense. Chief Karate Instructor of America
puts it nicely, saying: "We must be strong enough to express
our true minds to any opponent, anytime, in any circumstance.
We must be calm enough to express ourselves humbly."
